Game review

Do you alter course to step on spiders? And think the only good bug is one you just blew into itty-bitty pieces? Then Capcom’s producer for their new snow-covered action/adventure game Lost Planet, Kenji Inafune has created a game that will allow you to exercise your inner demon? You play Wayne a human male running with a group of vigilantes called the Snow Pirates, whose only memory is of his father’s death in the jaws of an Akrid (the insect-like aliens responsible for the arctic conditions on Lost Planet). Now your one desire is for the death of every Akrid bug on the sub-zero surface of the Planet, unless the planet kills you first? For death arrives in the cold clutches of gigantic mechanoids almost invisible in the swirling snowstorms, in the dripping maw of monstrous alien creatures as they explode out of the ground, in the sharp claws of terrifying winged-creatures swooping out of the dark skies or just the slow depletion of your body heat (thermal energy indicated by the counter on the top left of the screen and replenished by the elimination of enemies). So grab your backpack, you’re roughing it in the frozen wilderness of an unknown planet, somewhere in time.

Rough hardly describes the eye-popping graphics and ear-catching sound track of Lost Planet though. Together they create a totally immersive universe set to grab the attention of gamers daring to walk the snowdrifts of Lost Planet. And although Lost Planet is primarily a foot-found, third person, shooter, you will have to use a device called a Vital Suit in order to survive on Lost Planet. Vital Suits are basically metal exoskeletons that come in a variety of types and sizes. But there hard to come by, you will have to dig them out of the snow or take them from an enemy, if your skilled enough. Wayne is equipped with a wide variety of weapons including machine guns, rocket launchers, grenades and more. The designers also gave him a neat little item called a grappling hook to quickly ascend heights or grab onto things.

Lost planet will be ready for you in 2007, so put a marker in your memory to walk in the cold boots of Wayne as he battles to save the Lost Planet this year. I predict an avalanche of video gamers playing Lost Planet in 2007. For this game is smoking! By “Warren Hayashi”
